H. Derick Phan, D.D.S., C.A.G.S. Dr. H. Derick Phan grew up in San Jose, California, and attended Leland High School, where he was a star volleyball player and track and field athlete. Its a dream come true for him to be back to his home city, making beautiful smiles for the community that he grew up in. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California Riverside, where he continued to play volleyball as well as work as a dental assistant and as a girls high school volleyball coach, discovering his two passions and talents: making beautiful smiles and volleyball. He followed his dream and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. Dr. Phan was then accepted to a prestigious Graduate Residency Program at the Loma Linda VA Medical Center.
He went into private practice in the Salinas/Monterey Bay area as a family and cosmetic dentist, and then spent a year specializing in pediatric dentistry. He then switched coasts once again and completed his orthodontic residency at Jacksonville University Dental School of Orthodontics, where he completed his thesis on Invisalign and interproximal reduction.This extensive experience and rigorous study has allowed Dr. Phan to become one of Californias leading orthodontists.
Dr. Phan has been in practice for over 15 years now and was featured as PHOENIX Magazines Top Orthodontist for 2006 and 2007. He was voted Best Orthodontist by But Tre Magazine in 2007 and received the Comfort Dental Gold Award for Clinical Excellence in 2008. He strives to stay on the forefront of the newest orthodontic techniques and technology by traveling all over the United States (and sometimes the world) for continuing education courses. He also serves as an Opal Evaluation Counsel member to help test, evaluate, research, and develop the latest orthodontic products.Besides creating beautiful smiles, Dr. Phan enjoys many outdoor activities and is an avid snowboarder. He has also been a high school girls volleyball coach for over 12 years and has coached in five different states, taking his teams to the state and national level. He is a volleyball player as well, having competed at the high school, college, and professional club level. He still competes as a track and field athlete to this day, just as he did 25 years ago in high school. As you can see from his pictures, he has stayed the path over the years and still does all the things he loves in life sports and making beautiful smiles. Chances are, in his spare time you might see him at your local high school gym, on the track ,or on the ski slopes. He is an active supporter of our local schools and contributes thousands of dollars every year to our schools, youth programs, and fundraising events. Dr. Phan is the largest provider for the foster kids of Santa Clara County, offering (and often donating) his services. Dr. Phan belongs to and is a member of many dental organizations. Dr. Moon was born and raised in Los Angeles. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley and receive her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University Of Southern California. During her dental training, she discovered her love of orthodontics and continued her training at USC for her degree in Orthodontics and Masters in Craniofacial Biology. She completed her thesis on the effect of orthognathic surgery on the condyle. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Moon followed her husband to the Big Apple, New York City, and practiced orthodontics there until moving to the Bay Area.
Her hobbies are many types of arts and crafts. She is a self-taught seamstress and crocheter. She dreamed of making her own wedding dress and succeeded. She also crochets small hats and other accessories for infants, and enjoys amigurumi.
Dr. Moon prides herself in attention to detail for both in her personal and professional life, whether it be for her hobby or finishing an orthodontic case. She continues to update her education by attending continuing education courses and conventions, and reading journals. She also received her Board Certification from the American Board of Orthodontists.
Dr. Golnaz Kavand obtained her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from Boston University with High Honors. Following that, she moved to the Midwest and obtained a Master of Science in Dentistry and a clinical certificate in Orthodontics from Indiana University. During residency, Dr. Kavand studied the impact of palatal expansion on upper airway volume and published the results of her study in the prestigious journal, The Angle Orthodontist. In addition, Dr. Kavand has a Masters in Dental Public Health from The University of Iowa, with a focus on the dental esthetic perception in young adolescents and their parents.
Dr. Kavand has worked in multiple private practices in Ohio and Southern California and is excited to bring her expertise to serve patients in the Bay Area. Dr. Kavand is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and an active member of both the American and the California Association of Orthodontists.
