As a Colorado native, Dr. Derek Petersen established his practice in Broomfield, near his childhood home in Boulder.After graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in Biology and cum laude honors, he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine in 2009. Following graduation, he worked for a year as an associate dentist in a successful practice in the Denver area. He consequently accepted a position at Plains Medical Center, a Federal Qualified Health Center, serving the eastern plains of Colorado with locations in Strasburg, Limon and Flagler.He has acquired a wealth of experience treating patients of all ages with a wide range of dental needs.
Dr. Derek has developed a reputation as a gentle and caring dentist. Many patients who were initially very anxious about going to the dentist due to bad experiences in the past have said that they feel quite comfortable being treated by him. He has a gentle touch and takes time to explain things in a way that puts his patients at ease. For the past three years, Dr. Derek has been included in Delta Dentals Achieve Provider Network, an earned recognition awarded for consistently providing excellent preventive care and outstanding service to patients.Additionally, he has received Best of Broomfield recognition awards in 2015, 2016, and 2017. In 2017, he was nominated by his peers to be included in the 5280 Magazine issue highlighting Denvers Top Dentists in 2017 and 2018.
Dr. Derek enjoys spending much of his leisure time with his wife and children, continually basking in the wonders of fatherhood. He loves to experience Colorados beauty through the wonderful outdoor activities available.
Dr. Gene Petersen graduated with honors from Northwestern UniversityDental School in 1969 after earning a B.A.in Biology, also at Northwestern.He served three years in the U.S. Public Health Service, including a one-year rotating internship at the USPHS Hospital in Seattle and two years as Chief Dental Officer at the U.S. Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana. It was there he honed hisskills in diagnosis,advanced oral surgery and prosthodontics (tooth replacement) and trained inmates inlaboratorytechniques, which facilitated their rehabilitation and employmentupon their release from prison.
He found his way to Boulder, CO in 1972 where he practiced general dentistry until heretired from active practice in 2001.Dr. Geneis constantly reminded by his former patients of the excellent care he provided them.They often call from distant places to report that their present dentist had nothing but praise for the skilled dental work in their mouths. Although his was a general dentistry practice, Dr. Gene trained in all of the specialties including orthodontics (braces), endodontics (root canal treatment), periodontics (gum treatment) and surgery.His patients were pleased to be ableto have their needs met at his office.During those years he also served as President of the Boulder County Dental Society and chaired the Peer Review Committee.Prior to being asked to fill the position ofBusiness Managerfor Dr. Derek, he served as Vice President of Public Relations at Dental Marketing Services, Inc. in Golden, CO.
He is the father of three daughters and one son (Dr. Derek) and has twelve grandchildren.He enjoys oil painting, writing, family history research, kayaking, camping and Dutch oven cooking.Dr. Gene cant remember ever being bored.We are fortunate to be able to take advantage of his vast knowledge and experience here at Petersen Family Dentistry.
