Your childs lifetime of good oral health depends on the dental care he/she receives today. A healthy child is a happy child and oral hygiene can affect everything from nutrition and self-esteem to academics and speech.

All Smiles Childrens Dentistry is here to help parents with prevention. Our goal is to give families the resources to help them care for their teeth. After your first visit, we recommend you visit us every six months to help you stay on top of your childs oral health and establishing consistency for your child to form good dental health care habits.

It is best to brush your childs teeth twice a day. You want to use a small and soft brush. We recommend replacing your toothbrush every 3-6 months. Brush in small circular motions and make sure to brush the gums as well as the teeth, but brush gently or you may damage the gums. Make sure to brush the sides of all teeth as well as the flat, chewing surfaces, and dont forget to brush your tongue.

Flossing helps remove plaque between. You can not reach these areas with a toothbrush, making it important to floss every day. Take a piece of floss about 18 inches long and wrap one end around one of your middle fingers and the other end around your other middle finger, until your hands are a few inches apart. Carefully work the floss between each of your teeth and towards your gums. Be sure to get beneath the gums and move up and down several times. Also, try not to pop the floss in and out, because it can cause hurt your gums.

Sugar can cause cavities. Starch can also cause cavities. When starch is broken down, it can turn into sugar. It is good to avoid foods that have high sugar content and are sticky, such as fruit snacks. These items can get stuck to your teeth very easily. Instead, think about substituting friendlier foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables or dairy products like cheese and yogurt. Its also best to not have too many sugary drinks like juice or soda. You can swap these liquids out in favor of things such as milk and water.

Good hygiene is the first step towards preventing cavities. Through proper care and nutrition, we can help our kids avoid unhealthy teeth. Caries is the medical term for the disease that leads to cavities.By creating an environment for strong and healthy teeth, we can keep our children from ever going down a road of poor hygiene that leads to caries and then, ultimately, to cavities.
