Dr. M. Don Bell attained the Doctor of Medical Dentistry (DMD) degree at The University of Alabama School of Dentistry in Birmingham (1975). He was then commissioned as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Upon retiring in 2005, Dr. Bell returned to Alabama, where he started his private dental practice. He says, 'Alabama is where I love to be, and dentistry is what I love to do.'
While serving in the USAF, Dr. Bell was selected to provide the ultimate standard of restorative dental care to SR-71 pilots - whose mission requirements necessitated their strictest maintenance of optimal dental health. If even a minute element of dentistry became compromised in any way as a result of flying at greater than Mach 3 speed above 85,000 feet, the consequences to these particular patients would have been catastrophic. During three decades of Dr. Bell's military service, not a single one of his pilot patients had to cancel or even modify a single flying mission because of a dental issue.
Such technical challenges notwithstanding, Dr. Bell's most personally rewarding experiences came about as a result of his participation in the total reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry service provided to this nation's POWs. In every case, Dr. Bell was privileged to help repair the effects of egregious dental decay and destruction (caused by neglect and abuse in enemy hands). He was able to provide his patients with healthy, fully functional, and confident smiles. Because many of these patriots suffered from symptoms of anxiety-related psychological disorders, Dr. Bell successfully employed the sedation skills necessary to ensure patient comfort throughout lengthy dental treatments.
